Abstract painting

Horizon, oil on gessoed panel, 6″ x 8″, 2010

For some time, I have been experimenting with hide glue/mineral dust gesso grounds on Masonite panels.  Is it worth the trouble?  I think so.  This painting is basically a small exercise in playing with scales of value and chroma, but the ground gives it a glow and texture that is quite different from canvas.

I feel like the scarlet red’s not totally working here, probably because it doesn’t go dark enough into the shades, but I’m taking that as a lesson learned and moving on.  Maybe later I’ll feel that it does work.  The viridian could get a little darker as well.  I’m pretty happy with the lights.
