This is an example of how things got more complicated with these grid paintings – I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of overlying different patterns on top of one another to create a sense of depth without it being clear just what is in front and what is in the background. In execution, it is closely analogous to music with overlaying rhythms and melodies.

This is painted on a traditional gesso panel – rabbit skin glue and marble dust laid on in several layers and sanded smooth.
